Dan has the look of a scholar or, at least, a guy who spends most of his time tinkering with nerdy things. His hair is dark brown (almost black) and he has a small beard and his eyes are also a brown-ish color. He almost always a somewhat vacant, unsure look about himself that comes from the fact that half the time he doesn't remember where he is unless he concentrates and he tends to flail his hands around when he's thinking. He also frequently pauses when he talks like he seriously has to think about what he has to say next, which makes him an awkward conversationalist.

"I'm a physicist. Well I guess you could call me a physicist, I don't really like being pigeon-holed into one..."

Once upon a time, Daniel was a physics professor at Oxford, who in his spare time was conducting experiments on theoretical time travel and created a machine that would allow a person's (or a rat's) consciousness to travel through time through exposure to a certain level of electromagnetic radiation.

Further proving his theory correct was when he was visited by Desmond Hume (who claimed to be sent by Daniel in the future), also "unstuck in time," who actually presented him with the correct numbers that allowed his experiment to work properly. Unfortunately, Eloise, his lab rat, died sometime after the experiment because she didn't have a "constant"- something that exists in both past and future that would allow her to be grounded and keep her consciousness from shifting and overloading her brain. This prompts Desmond to assert Penelope Widmore as his constant and prevent himself from dying.

Through, more than likely, overexposure to radiation, Dan's memory was affected to the point that he required the use of a caretaker, although, despite that, he was still offered a position on a team bound for The Island to look for Ben Linus. While there, he discovered that the island is under a time anomaly that can have certain side effects on people traveling to and from the island, especially if they've been exposed to electromagnetic radiation, which seems to suggest that he fears what happened to Desmond will eventually happen to him. He seems to have no memory of his meeting with Desmond, save a notation in his journal that says "if anything goes wrong, Desmond Hume will be my constant."

Dan arrived through the Rift with Juliet Burke, despite the fact that they have no real alliance. Being the friendly guy he is, he doesn't mind it as much as she does.

In a fit of irony, the Rift seems to have given him eidetic memory, which allows him to remember everything he hears, sees, or reads. Despite that he still tends to "word-search" and pause awkwardly in his setences mostly out of habit and also because it takes him a minute to sort through all the information in his head.

"This, if the numbers you gave me are correct, what this will do is unstick Eloise in time. Just like you."
