"I don't... Really know what I'm doin' here."
The words come out as a slight wheeze as Daniel winces and tries to curl in on himself a bit more, but the broken bones protest the movement and he lets out another sharp gasp of pain and just fixates on burying the side of his face even further into the nest of dirt and dead leaves on the jungle floor. The one eye not on the ground swivels up to see the monstrous black shape looming over him as if waiting to see how he reacts... Or maybe it's just waiting to see what he has to say.
"I thought... I thought I did," he adds. Another whimper escapes his throat. Everything hurts and his vision is starting to go a little gray around the edges. "Time's not... Time's not supposed to be so torsible. You can't... You just change things... If you twist them around... and... And..."
And what?
"I don't know anymore." He swallows hard and closes his eyes, waiting for the hammer to fall. "I'm so sorry."
The small mercy is that if this really does go to hell, he won't have to stand idly by and know he's useless.
